A Brief History of High Performance Computing and Data Analysis from the Trenches

Blair Christian – PYA Analytics

This isn’t your mentor’s data analysis. The questions are less clear and larger in number. The data can be overwhelming in volume and quality. It’s not always easy to automate tasks. The statistical methodology you learned might seem inadequate. The newest technology and bigger data should empower you, but frequently this is not the case in practice. There is a paradigm shift occurring in data analysis from data collection to storage to analysis methodology.

This presentation covers the recent history of the use of high performance computing for data analysis. It discusses the basic hardware, software and statistical definitions in addition to experiences gleaned from a decade using R and SAS.

Business Analytics and Big Data are fast becoming the next wave in management improvement strategies similar to Six Sigma, Lean and TQM. There are examples everywhere of poor implementation of these methodologies; if Business Analytics (BA) is poorly implemented, the profits from Big Data will be primarily in the hands of consultants, hardware and software providers, instead of in the hands of the companies implementing BA!
